Tax-Free Shopping
As of October 2014, international visitors spending less than 6 months in Japan are eligible for tax exemption on general items and consumable goods. To qualify, the value of purchases made within one day, and at one store excluding consumption tax (8%) must exceed ¥10,001 for general items, and more than ¥5,001 but less than ¥500,000 on consumable items. Passports (not copies) must be shown at the time of purchase to qualify, in shops displaying the “Japan. Tax-free Shop” sign.
